I just want to share my thoughts on the current situation regarding the multi-billion kina LNG project currently making headlines here and abroad.
With this new project pumping in millions if not billions of kina into our economy, I wonder where we will end up. Will we, the grass-roots and common people on the streets, see any evidence of this money in the form of better service delivery of infrastructure such as more hospitals & clinics, access to clean water, better road systems, improved law & order? All these questions beg an answer.
If our government's past actions are anything to judge by, I doubt that we will see any of this money filter down to the rural village people. PNG had its fair share of mining companies come in before, yet we did not see any improvements in our living standards! OK Tedi Mining, Bougainville Copper Ltd, Porgera Joint Venture, Lihir Gold Ltd to name just a few... what happened to the millions they paid to the PNG government as tax?I hope that I am proved wrong and that every single PNGean will benefit from this major project.
It takes a Leader to make the right decisions that will benefit all the people and not just himself and his cronies. In his last term as the Prime Minister of this country, will Michael Somare do the right thing by the very people who gave him the mandate to govern this country?.. or will the gap between the rich and poorer widen? Only time will tell...
